Savory Cheese and Herb Scones made approachable with clear cues, pantry staples, and flexible swaps.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter cold and cubed
  • 1 cup shredded cheese cheddar or your choice
  • 0.25 cup fresh herbs chopped (like chives or parsley)
  • 1 large egg
  • 0.75 cup buttermilk

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and prepare a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cut the cold butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the shredded cheese and fresh herbs until evenly distributed.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and buttermilk until combined.
  6. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and stir until just combined.
  7. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times to bring it together.
  8. Pat the dough into a circle about 1-inch thick, then cut it into wedges or use a biscuit cutter for rounds.
  9. Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet and brush the tops with a bit of buttermilk for extra browning.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
